The video, which has been shared online thousands of times, was taken on Tuesday and shows two police officers arresting the man, telling him to get “down on the floor”.
Instead of doing so, the man repeatedly asks why and shouts back: “I am not a criminal”.
During the course of the incident, the video shows an officer hitting the man several times with an extendable baton. Sho Abu posted the video on Facebook and it has since been shared more than 3,000 times, the so far video receive angry responses.
Mr Abu wrote: “I don’t know what the commuter actually did, but the police [were] trying to arrest him. “He said to the police officers ‘do not treat me like a criminal, I will go with you” yet they decided to hit him. Make your own mind about the situation.”
A spokesman for British Transport Police said they had been made aware of the video.
He said: “Officers attended the station following reports from staff of fare evasion, and a man, aged 40 and from Thamesmead, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of fare evasion and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH). “The man has since been bailed to Sunday, 13 March pending further enquiries.”
