A 61-year-old pastor, Adejare Adebayo, has been remanded in the Agodi Prison in Ibadan, Oyo State, by a magistrate’s court for allegedly cutting off the left breast of his wife with a kitchen knife on Christmas Eve.
The court heard that the wife, Mrs. Risikayat Adegbule, 43, died a few days later as a result of the injury suffered during the attack, which occurred at Onikankan village, on the outskirt of Ibadan.
The accused, who is the pastor in charge of Glory Triumphant Chapel, Moniya, Ibadan, appeared before Chief Magistrate F. Richard on Monday and pleaded not guilty to the one count preferred against him. The prosecutor, Mr. Sunday Ogunremi, alleged that the crime was committed in the midnight.
After cutting off the left breast of his wife, Mrs. Risikayat Adegbule, 43, the woman reportedly suffered excruciating pain from the wound before giving up the ghost after a few days. He was quoted as saying that he cut the other affected breast because his dead wife had earlier suffered cancer in her left breast.
The charge read, “That you, Pastor Adejare Adebayo, on December 24, 2016, at 12am, in Onikankan village, Ibadan, did unlawfully cause the death of Rukayat Adegbule, aged 43, by cutting her breast, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap IX, Vol. 11, Law of Oyo State, Nigeria.”
After ordering the pastor’s remand in prison custody, the chief magistrate adjourned the case till February 14, 2017.
