Gary Neville appointed Valencia head coach ahead of brother Phil Neville

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has been appointed temporary head coach of La Liga side Valencia over his brother Philip. Philip Neville, who has been the assistant manager of Valencia since the summer, was placed in temporary control of the team after the departure of previous manager Nuno Espirito Santo last Sunday.

But in a shock move, owner Peter Lim has turned to Sky Sports pundit Gary, whose first match in charge will be their must-win Champions League clash at home to Lyon on 9th December. Neville will continue his coaching role with England but will call time on his work with Sky Sports.

Valencia statement on hiring Gary Neville:

‘We are delighted to have secured Gary so quickly. ‘He combines top level coaching experience through his role as a senior coach with the England national team and a world-class playing career.
‘Throughout his career, Gary has always shown great leadership both on and off the pitch. ‘He is hugely respected in English football and it was his personal qualities which persuaded us that he was the right choice to lead Valencia.’
