A four-legged chicken has been found on a farm in east China. The bird was recently discovered in Heze city, Shandong Province by chicken farmers Ms Zhu and her father, who said the unusual animal had shocked neighbours and friends.
In addition to its normal legs, the chicken has two limbs on the lower part of its body. It can still run, and although it has an abnormal physique, local experts claimed it is still edible, reports the People’s Daily Online. More after the cut…
Ms Zhu, whose family run the farm, said they have had many curious visitors to since they found the bird. Many of them have been taking pictures which has frightened the chicken, and she is worried it might not live much longer.
‘It is probably terrified and seems to be dying,’ said Ms Zhu.
On Monday morning the chicken had been running around all day but by the afternoon it could barely move. Ms Zhu’s father also helps to run the farm, he reportedly found the bird and has been looking after it in a box since. The chicken farm currently holds around 10,000 birds and only one is different.
Speaking to reporters, Cai Zhongfeng, the supervisor of the Animal Husbandry Station in Heze city said the four-legged chicken is a product of malformation, where its body has formed abnormally. He added that it is still edible and generally does not cause any harm to humans, but it may not live comfortably.
This is not the first time a four-legged chicken has been found in China. In 2012 a woman in Changsha was horrified when she discovered a chicken she had just purchased from her local market had two extra limbs.
